Right-click* on the link to the PDF and save the PDF
as a file to your desktop. Open PDF with a PDF reader such as Acrobat reader.
When you click on a link to a PDF document in a web
site, a variety of things may happen depending on how
the webmaster has set the link, and how you have your
computer configured and the browser software you are using:
First of all, due to the rise of browser plug-ins
which allow you to view a PDF in line (and the subsequent
loss of site navigation) Crestone Creations and
the
sites we maintain generally sets pdf document links
to open in a new browser window. That way, if you
have the plug-in, you handle the document in a separate
window. If you don't, you have a blank window and
the
file downloads. You may close the blank window
and continue on your merry way.
PC Users and IE (Internet Explorer) users may get
a dialogue box that says your browser doesn't
know how
to handle this file type and asks you what to
do. Just click on the "Save File As" option
and save it to a location of your choice, like
any file save.
Users may find that the PDF
file will automatically
download to their hard drive into a folder
that you, the user, have specified. This is the typical
case
for Safari Users.
Users may need to / choose to right-click
on the link to choose a specific download location.
if you
do not you may find that the file goes into
a temporary folder within your browser's world.
Users may also find that the PDF opens within
their browser. Your browser window will be
blank until the
PDF loads. Then, it shows up like a web page,
but without naviagation. Adobe reader will
give you the
opportunity to save this document if you wish.
This is the result first mentioned above.
How do you know in advance if a link goes to
a PDF and not to a regular ol' page? Sometimes the webmaster indicates to you in some way that this is a PDF before you click, but if not, you will have to do your own checking. If you have view status bar
selected, when you
hover your pointer (mouse) over the link,
it should
give you an address and if it ends in .htm
or .html then it is a simple web page, and
if it
ends in
.pdf, it is a PDF. If it is not set to open in a new window, then right-click on it and download it or select to open it in a new window.
What is a PDF anyway?
